The global fraternal society of Freemasonry is several centuries old. Freemasonry reached Estonia again in 1991 and since then, Masonic activities have gradually developed and grown in this country, although our rules lay down the private nature of several aspects of our deeds. For this reason the character, teaching, purposes and everyday life of our organisation have not been widely covered by media and the society’s overall perception of Freemasonry often tends to be somewhat unilateral, sketchy or even inadequate.

Such an understanding of Freemasonry has formed as a result of several factors as well as acts of people and organisations already since the 18th century. The historic inertia is substantial and changing of social attitudes is never easy.

Still, previous decades have brought about several major and positive shifts in the close relationship and mutual understanding of Freemasonry and the modern society.

Such a development has occurred due to a shared wish of both sides to develop a benevolent dialogue and it has already resulted in some splendid results in many countries. Communication has become especially efficient during the Internet era that has also inspired many Freemasons who have recently published thousands of web pages about the Craft.

Numerous grand lodges have their own homepages as well. We hope that these pages enable you to form a better understanding of the nature, role and functioning of Freemasonry in the society.

Just as Freemasonry cannot be summarised in one book, no matter how thick, it cannot be thoroughly explained on a single website. Still we hope that these pages help you to grasp the Ariadne’s thread to find your way in the diverse and fascinating world of Freemasonry.
